On August 4, 2025, the AXA Philippines team took a powerful step forward in prioritizing employee wellbeing through the “Establishing Mental Health Champions in the Workplace” training, in collaboration with Premier Value Provider Inc. (PVP).
Facilitated by Jose Mari A. Hulleza—known to many as Sir Jomar—the training was a deep dive into how employees can become empowered advocates for mental wellness in their organization.

What Is a Mental Health Champion?
A mental health champion is more than just a title—it’s a commitment to challenge stigma, offer compassionate support, and promote a workplace culture where mental health is seen, heard, and valued. The training focused on equipping participants with vital knowledge and skills including:
Recognizing common mental health disorders in and out of the workplace
Responding to crisis situations and understanding emotional reactions
Practicing rapport-building and supportive communication
Learning the RAPIDS Model: Reflective Listening, Assessment, Prioritization, Intervention, Disposition, and Self-Care
Readiness from Within
The session began by unveiling survey results answered by AXA team members before the event. The graph showed strong readiness across key areas:
Emotional stability and cultural sensitivity
Mental health awareness
Commitment to personal wellbeing
Readiness to help peers in need
These insights confirmed what many already knew—the AXA team is not just ready, but eager to become true mental health champions.

Learning by Doing: Role-Play Scenarios
One of the highlights was the role-play activity, where teams were given real-life inspired scenarios to practice their helping skills. Through guided skits, participants explored how to respond empathetically and apply what they learned in a practical, engaging way. This hands-on approach encouraged creativity, collaboration, and honest reflection.

What the Participants Loved Most
Feedback from the post-evaluation reflected the session’s impact:
“I like the real-world examples and how relatable the scenarios were.”
“This session is a life skill—not just applicable to work.”
“I liked the open and safe space created by the trainers.”
“The activities and sharing of actual experience—Ms. Aimee, Ms. Mel, and our teacher’s collective support, humor, and wisdom—made it more memorable.”
“The flow of the discussion and the very engaging speaker.”
“Making a skit for each scenario as an activity really helped us process the lessons.”
From structured modules to spontaneous discussions and laughter, it was a training that truly resonated.
Why Mental Health Champions Matter
In every organization, mental health is a shared responsibility. Trainings like this empower employees not just with knowledge—but with confidence, empathy, and practical tools to make a real difference. A culture of care doesn’t happen overnight—but with champions like those at AXA, it's clearly within reach.
